Challenging aspects between Uranus and Venus or Mars can create problems by making the individual impulsive and addicted to excitement in some form, especially when Venus and Mars are in the Fire signs and to a lesser extent when they’re in the Air signs. However, when Venus and Mars are in Earth signs or Water signs, individuals can experience a “tug of war” within between a desire for excitement, recklessness, rebelliousness, and even on the one hand, and the need to control themselves and maintain the status quo. If Saturn also aspects Venus or Mars, the tug of war grows stronger and can create great mental and physical tension for the natives. Such tension should be released periodically, preferably through some physical discipline such as sports, exercise, martial arts, or yoga, or the rising tension can play havoc with the natives’ health and well-being. Whether or not Saturn is involved in the aspect, the natives may still pursue their desire for excitement and challenge through dangerous activities such as car racing or even by driving recklessly. However, when Saturn also aspects the same planet, the natives must take great care at the same time in their pursuit of speed and excitement, since Saturn will eventually make them pay the price of any mistakes or transgressions they make.

Despite what some may think, I don’t live my life entirely by astrology. However, there are certain periods of life when astrology can help explain what’s happening and offer some advice about how to deal with the difficult circumstances we find ourselves experiencing. The following two transits are not yet exact in my chart, but I’m already feeling their effects, as may some other forty-somethings reading this. Any comments or questions are welcome and I’ll try to explain and answer them the best I can.

From the book Astrology for the Millions by Grant Lewi, pages 339-340 and 325-326: Saturn Transit Opposite Your Saturn: “Occurring between the ages of forty and forty-four, this aspect marks, generally, a turning point in the career, following which the aim should be security rather than further aggressive progress. According to the choices made when you were from thirteen to fifteen years of age, (the last time this aspect occurred), this second transit of Saturn opposite its own place will find you in a satisfactory of unsatisfactory mental and material position. Regardless of this, however, you must recede hereafter from aggressive action in the world; must fix your aims at personal, rather than material, progress; and must set your goal at security. Business changes frequently made at this time and work out well if risks are avoided and ironclad contracts substituted for hit-and-miss methods. Falling in the well-known “prime of life,” it sometimes urges further expansion of the ego (see the following transit description which coincides with it in time). But for the best results you should be willing to start a more moderate and secure course than you have hitherto followed. And to be sure that you do this, examine any change you consider now primarily in light of the effect that it will have on your security and your personal contentment in years to come.”

Uranus Transit Opposite Your Uranus: “This coincides with the previous transit. Since the two fall at once, their action will be indistinguishable one from the other. However, while Saturn’s opposition of its place does things to your material progress and demands retreat on the material plane, this aspect is bringing your originality to full fruition and promising satisfaction from the development of inner and personal talents which may or may not have a material aspect. To make the necessary adjustments suggested in the previous section, heed the important note of individualism mounting within you; interpret it, not in business, but in private achievement (study, writing, creative work of some sort) and seek to plan your life from here on so as to leave time and energy for the many things you have “always wanted to do, but never quite got around to.” This is bound to be a period of important change, and your must approach it in full command of yourself, ready and able to follow the dictates of your intelligence, rather than your emotions, which will be unreliable.”

In honor of the full Moon in Taurus we just had, here’s an excerpt from my discussion of the Moon and chart comparisons:

Although many books have also been written about the Moon in the signs, since this planet plays such an important role in determining compatibility, much more room will devoted in my book to its delineation in the signs. The Moon governs the emotions and the subconscious, two forces that greatly affect relationships, particularly romantic relationships. While you may be able to tolerate someone who conflicts with your Moon if they were just an acquaintance or even a friend, you will most likely find it quite difficult to get along with the same person if they were a lover or an immediate relative. People tend to express their Moon signs more fully in private than they do in public, because while the Ascendant and the Sun are how people in the outside world tend to see you, the Moon is how you are inside, how you often see yourself. It governs habit patterns and the domestic environment, and can affect the way you eat, sleep, and most importantly, how you express your emotions. In many cultures, emotions are supposed to be kept to oneself, which strengthens the hold the Moon has over the private sphere, as it strengthens the power of the subconscious over our behavior. Any planet that aspects the Moon will therefore strongly affect the subconscious, and as a result, the psychological makeup of the personality.

Interestingly, one aspect that has a similar impact on the personality, no matter what signs are involved, is the opposition between the Sun and Moon. This aspect takes place during the full Moon, but its effect does not really have anything to do with the craziness associated with that phenomenon. Instead, it creates very strong, exuberant personalities, who may appear almost like a fire sign if it weren’t for the moodiness they can sometimes exhibit.

One might better conclude that a soulmate relationship is not necessarily perfect in the sense that the two people never fight and never have any problems together. Instead, the purpose of a soulmate relationship could be that the two people are together in order to work out their problems and issues. From this perspective, even a very difficult, negative relationship could be considered a soulmate relationship. If one believes in reincarnation, as the common definition of soul mates usually presumes to be true, then one could take this chain of thought further and conclude that any love relationship could be a soulmate relationship. Since there are numerous examples of people who have experienced more than one romantic relationship in a lifetime, it is also possible to conclude that there could be more than one soulmate “out there” for each person.

Nevertheless, most people who use the term soulmate (or soul mate) use it to refer to “The One,” the person who they were destined to meet, fall in love with, and then live with happily ever after. The fact that there are very few relationships like that, one could instead conclude that there are very few soulmates and that you won’t meet your soul mate until each person is “evolved” enough spiritually. From this perspective, everyone else is just a stepping-stone towards achieving the goal of a soulmate relationship in this or another lifetime. Or, one could consider all the failed relationships in the world and conclude that the people involved were deluded into thinking they were meant to be together. From this perspective, there is no “soulmates,” no perfect partner waiting for each person. Instead, there are relationships that have positive and negative sides, but none that are ever perfect.

I think that the “perfect relationship” definition of soulmates denigrates the importance of relationships in our lives. If only soulmate relationships never end, and all others are mistakes, then that means that all relationships that end are meaningless. I would argue that no relationship, even the innocent crush of a young person, is ever meaningless. Each person we meet, and especially the people we form a bond with, however short lived it may be, has some reason for being a part of our life experience. That doesn’t mean that some relationships can’t be more significant than others can. It simply means that we need to experience many contacts with many different people in order to grow and evolve mentally and spiritually, and that each of these contacts has some significance to us.

One of the relationship challenges that many people face is the issue of attracting the wrong person. Although psychology offers some explanation for this, it usually involves deep issues and the darker side of relationships, like why someone might continually attract abusive or destructive partners. The reasons usually stem from childhood, i.e. having parents who were abusive, or alcoholics, or who abandoned their children in one way or another. Astrology can help provide similar explanations because our parents and the nature of our relationship with them is revealed in the birth chart. But what about more ordinary cases, such as being attracted to one type of person while attracting a different type, a type you don’t find attractive? Or what if you are really attracted to one type, but they never seem find you to be attractive?

The answers to these questions can usually be found by examining the positions of Venus and Mars in the birth chart, as I do extensively in my book. Take for example what I wrote on page 90: ” … relationship difficulties can still arise even without an afflicted Venus or Mars [afflictions to Saturn or the outer planets usually cause the deep psychological issues type of attraction, as I explain earlier in my book] simply because the planets are located in incompatible signs. When this occurs, you can attract one kind of person but be attracted to a completely different kind. For example, a man with Venus in Gemini will likely be attracted to someone who is very talkative, flirtatious, and restless. However, if he has Mars in Capricorn, he will probably express himself in a very serious and controlled manner, which could completely turn off the social butterfly type he longs for. In another example, suppose a woman has Venus in Cancer and Mars in Leo. To her frustration, she could attract very sensitive, nurturing men when she instead feels attracted to showy, out-going, “masculine” men. Notice that both of these cases involve adjacent or inconjunct signs [five signs apart], which are completely different in personality. Another important point is that while the woman in the example will likely attract many men with Sun in Cancer, she will also tend to attract “Cancer-like” men, or men who have Cancer strongly in their charts, or express parts of the Cancer personality. Likewise, she may be attracted to Leo men, but also to men who display Leo-like personality traits, especially if they have Moon in Leo, Leo Rising, or Venus or Mars in Leo. The same thing goes for example of the man with Venus in Gemini, Mars in Capricorn. He’ll tend to be attracted to people who are Gemini-like, or at least have Air prominently in their chart.”
