One of the relationship challenges that many people face is the issue of attracting the wrong person.  Although psychology offers some explanation for this, it usually involves deep issues and the darker side of relationships, like why someone might continually attract abusive or destructive partners.  The reasons usually stem from childhood, i.e. having parents who were abusive, or alcoholics, or who abandoned their children in one way or another.  Astrology can help provide similar explanations because our parents and the nature of our relationship with them is revealed in the birth chart.  But what about more ordinary cases, such as being attracted to one type of person while attracting a different type, a type you don’t find attractive?  Or what if you are really attracted to one type, but they never seem find you to be attractive?

The answers to these questions can usually be found by examining the positions of Venus and Mars in the birth chart, as I do extensively in my book. Take for example what I wrote on page 90:  ” … relationship difficulties can still arise even without an afflicted Venus or Mars [afflictions to Saturn or the outer planets usually cause the deep psychological issues type of attraction, as I explain earlier in my book] simply because the planets are located in incompatible signs.  When this occurs, you can attract one kind of person but be attracted to a completely different kind.  For example, a man with Venus in Gemini will likely be attracted to someone who is very talkative, flirtatious, and restless.  However, if he has Mars in Capricorn, he will probably express himself in a very serious and controlled manner, which could completely turn off the social butterfly type he longs for.  In another example, suppose a woman has Venus in Cancer and Mars in Leo.  To her frustration, she could attract very sensitive, nurturing men when she instead feels attracted to showy, out-going, “masculine” men.   Notice that both of these cases involve adjacent or inconjunct signs [five signs apart], which are completely different in personality.  Another important point is that while the woman in the example will likely attract many men with Sun in Cancer, she will also tend to attract “Cancer-like” men, or men who have Cancer strongly in their charts, or express parts of the Cancer personality.  Likewise, she may be attracted to Leo men, but also to men who display Leo-like personality traits, especially if they have Moon in Leo, Leo Rising, or Venus or Mars in Leo.  The same thing goes for example of the man with Venus in Gemini, Mars in Capricorn.  He’ll tend to be attracted to people who are Gemini-like, or at least have Air prominently in their chart.”
